Citizen Science

Broadly, I'm interested in public engagement and public participation. If it involves getting the public involved, I can get jazzed about it. In graduate school, I study how scientists and citizen science leaders engage in and communicate about environmental citizen science. I interview and survey current leaders of projects about the language they use to describe their projects, their goals and strategies for addressing them, and how they overcome challenges. I am extremely grateful to my mentors Dr. Meena Balgopal and Dr. Greg Newman for their support, mentorship, and important role in this research.

Do you participate in citizen science in any capacity? Consider taking our survey on the differences between the terms "citizen science" and "community science". It should only take 10 minutes and you can be entered to win one of ten Fitbit Altas for completing it. Please feel free to share the survey with your networks and on Twitter!

In November 2020 I received first place in the CSU Graduate Student Showcase in the Interdisciplinary Research category. As a result, I was selected to present my research in my university's Three Minute Challenge competition. Check out the video below!

Ecology Mentoring Relationships

I'm currently helping with a study that came out of an evaluation effort of the Graduate Degree Program in Ecology's Research Mentoring to Advance Inclusivity in STEM program. I'm working on this project with Emily Stuchiner, Dr. Meena Balgopal, and Dr. Jennifer Neuwald. We're studying how graduate students and undergraduate students develop as intentional mentors and mentees. We're also interested in how intentional mentoring can increase inclusivity in Ecology.

STEM Educator Experiences during the COVID-19 Pandemic

For the Fall 2020 to Spring 2021 academic year, I have been working as a Graduate Research Assistant on an NSF-funded grant to study the experiences of STEM educators during the pandemic. I'm working on this project with members of the CSU Noyce Research Team, Dr. Meena Balgopal, Dr. Andrea Weinberg, and DeeDee Wright. We're interested in better understanding STEM teacher resilience and how, if at all, education systems will transform as a result of the pandemic.
